description Welcome to Smuggler's Den Campground The Worcester family began Smuggler's Den Campground in 1969 and continues to operate it today. Our goal then and now is to provide our customers with a comfortable and relaxed camping experience on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island.
drivingDirection From Interstate 95 take exit 182A (old exit 45A) to Route 395; follow to the end (3-5 miles) on to Route 1A – through Lucerne to Ellsworth (about 30 miles); In Ellsworth Route 1A will turn into Route 3; Continue on Route 3 past Wal-Mart through the town of Trenton to the head of Mount Desert Island (about 10 miles) where there will be a traffic light. At this traffic light your route will change to 102 (stay to your right and continue through the light) to Southwest Harbor (about 9 miles). Smuggler's Den Campground will be on your right. It is a little less than 50 miles from 395 in Brewer to Smuggler’s Den in Southwest Harbor, although your route numbers change your direction is straight ahead all the way to Smuggler’s Den. We Are Pet Friendly Wifi Available Over 25 miles of Acadia National Park hiking trails can be accessed from Smuggler's Den Campground. Click here for a list of hiking trails 4 acre recreation field with horseshoe pit, half court basketball, volleyball, badminton, and swings. Camp store - ice, wood, soda, groceries, lobsters and LP Gas. All sites are wooded or shaded and nicely sited with picnic table & fire ring. Tent and Pop-up Sites are available without hookups or with 30/20 amp. Electric and Water. RV Sites accommodate large Pop-ups and up to 45’ RV’s. RV’s Sites are 50/30/20 amp. Electric, Water, Sewer and Cable TV. We also offer 50/30/20 amp., Water, Sewer and Cable TV Sites with a Cement Pad! Clean bath house with free hot showers, dump-station and coin laundry. nearbyAttrctionDescription Area Activities Many hikes and walks begin at Smuggler’s Den Campground. Some of the trails accessible from Smuggler's Den Campground are: Beach Mountain, Western Mountain, Acadia Mountain and the Long Pond Trail. The Island Explorer Free Bus Service will take you virtually anywhere on Mount Desert Island that you want to go. You do not have to take your car to Bar Harbor or to tour the Park Loop Road if you do not want to. It is very safe and convenient and picks up and drops off right at our office. Acadia National Park is the second most visited national park in the United States, is 35,000 acres in area and includes over 40 miles of coastline. The Rockefeller Carriage Roads provide a wonderful opportunity to walk, run or bike over more than 40 miles of Acadia National Park without the annoyance of vehicular traffic. On the Eastern side of the Island you can travel the park loop road by car, bicycle or tour bus. Drive or hike Cadillac Mountain where you can be the first to see the sunrise on the east coast each morning along with other beautiful mountain hikes and coastal walks at all levels of difficulty. Tea and Popovers at the Jordan Pond House in Northeast Harbor. For more than a century it has been a summer tradition to walk or hike the lovely trails near Jordan Pond and afterwards enjoy an afternoon rest and snack at The Jordan Pond House. Swim at our heated pool with slide and kiddy pool or Acadia National Park’s Echo Lake Sand Beach is just a 20-minute walk. Canoe and Kayak rentals and tours for the lake or ocean. Golf at the ocean-side 9 hole Causeway Club golf course here in Southwest Harbor or at Kebo Valley’s 18 hole Golf Course in Bar Harbor. Attractions Southwest Harbor offers grocery markets, banks, all sorts of restaurants, gift and antique shopping. The Quietside or western side of Mount Desert Island features the Seawall area of Acadia National Park along with Ship Harbor, Wonderland and the Bass Harbor Head Light House (considered by some to be the most photographed light house in the world). The Bar Harbor Music Festival runs the entire month of July. The Mount Desert Oceanarium (two locations - Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor) Visitors can interact and enjoy close up views of our coastal flora and fauna. The Great Maine Lumberjack Show in Trenton is a fun and exciting stop for the entire family. There are many Island Boat Cruises to choose from – whale watching, sailing, sightseeing, deep sea fishing and lobstering. Museums The Abbe Museum features Maine native archaeology, history and culture. The Natural History Museum at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor features dioramas depicting the plant and animal life of costal Maine. The Wendell Gilley Museum of Bird Carving in Southwest Harbor offers carving demonstrations, wildlife art exhibits and natural history programs.
